On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival following year later, the four of them gathered at the Sang family house to celebrate the festival.
Before dinner started, Wen Yifan was called away by the station and didn’t come back until ten o’clock. Their parents went to bed early, so Sang Rong and Li Ping washed up and retired for the night.
The remaining three had nothing to do so they just played a game called Fight The Landlord. They just wanted to kill the time so the stakes were low, starting at one yuan per round and doubling for a bomb, without any complex rules.
Sang Zhi had originally planned for Sang Yan to always be the landlord, allowing her and Duan Jiaxu to team up against him. However, she kept getting excellent cards and was eager to call the landlord in every game.
Sang Zhi wasn't very skilled at the game since she rarely played it. After several rounds, she was mercilessly defeated by the two older men. Her frustration steadily grew until it reached a peak. Despite the cards she received, Sang Zhi stubbornly chose to be the landlord every time.
She disregarded her husband and brother, considering the opponents as the enemy.
In the next round, Sang Zhi played her cards and then changed her manner of address, mimicking Wen Yifan's earlier words, "Brother-in-law, it's your turn,”
Sang Yan didn’t mind and glanced at the cards, “What’s the result?”
Sang Zhi replied, “Three”
“Oh.” Sang Yan raised his hand and threw out four cards leisurely, “Bomb!”
“,,,,” Sang Zhi was stunned, her eyes widening in disbelief. After a brief pause, she exclaimed, “I just played a three!”
Sang Yan said nonchalantly, “Yeah, I know.”
Duan Jiaxu chuckled. This laughter which only fueled Sang Zhi's anger, “What are you laughing at! Hurry up and play your cards!”
Duan Jiaxu, still smiling, gently patted her head, as if he was stroking her hair, “Pass.”
Sang Zhi looked at the only trump card in her hand and decided to hold back for now, “Pass.”
Sang Yan leaned back in his chair and pretended to ponder for a moment.
Sang Zhi urged him, “Hurry up!”
Sang Yan said casually, “Then let’s go with four.”
